I. Answer the following:

1. What is a globe?

Ans: The Earth is Geoid in shape and is represented by a ‘GLOBE’ which is the miniature model of the Earth.

 

2. Mention any two uses of a globe.

Ans: The globe is useful to know the shape of the Earth. It helps us to understand the position, shape and size of the continents, oceans and seas.

 

3. What is a map?

Ans: A diagrammatic representation of the whole earth, or a part of it on a flat surface according to scale is called a Map.

 

4. Which are the different types of maps?

Ans: Classification of Maps:

a) Based on scale:      (i)Large scale maps    (ii) Small scale maps

b) Based on purpose:    (i)Physical maps     

(ii) Political maps        (iii) Distribution maps

 

5. Mention any two uses of maps.

Ans: Maps help us to locate places like towns, cities, districts, states, countries and continents.

They show the physical features such as mountains, plateaus, plains, coastal areas, islands, etc.

 

6. What is an Atlas?

Ans: ATLAS’ is a collection of various types of maps, bound as a book.

 

7. What is a scale?

Ans: A scale is a ratio between the distance on the map and the corresponding distance on the ground.

 

8. What are geographical symbols?

Ans: Geographical symbol is a sign that stands for an object and are used widely in maps to give information.

 

9. Which are the major components of a map?

Ans:   The basic components of Map are:

a) Title          

b) scale

c) Latitudes and Longitudes  

d) Direction

e) Index or key

 

10. What colour is used to show the water bodies in the map?

Answer: Blue colour is used to show the water bodies in the map.
