India’s Relationship With Other Countries

I. Fill in the blanks with appropriate answers :

II. Discuss in a group and answer the following questions :

1. Why do countries need to have a good relationship with other countries?
Ans: An independent country in the world cannot fulfil all its demands without the assistance of other countries. Without depending upon other countries assistance, co-operation, any country cannot achieve progress in economic and other fields. Especially there should be a good relationship with one country with its neighbours. Good relationship between neighbour countries is helpful to develop mutual understanding so that progress can be achieved economic gains, trade development, etc.

 

2. What are the reasons for tensions between India and Pakistan?
Ans: a) Military Dictatorship and political instability in Pakistan.

b) Kashmir problem between the two countries.

c) The threat of terrorism to India from Pakistan.

 

3. The relationship between India and China is recently spoiled. What are the reasons for this?

Ans: China’s claim over Arunachal Pradesh, one of our states is a significant issue of Indo-China relationship. Maoist’s terrorism in the form of Naxalism in India is also casting a shadow on our mutual relations. Our border is also not finally demarcated. As such, there is no well-settled International Border but we do have only Line of Actual Control. Even nuclear treat, foreign trade challenges, military advancements in the border areas are some of the issues which strain our relations with China.

 

4. India and the USA are two democratic countries. Explain the mutual cooperation that exists between both countries.

Ans: India and U.S.A. are big democratic nations in the world. The U.S.A. has helped us financially far our economic development through five-year plans. During Chinese in 1962, the support of the U.S.A. strengthened India. Later the U.S.A. extended its help, to Pakistan in the Indo-Pak words. Many a time the foreign policy of the U.S.A. has favoured Pakistan at our disadvantages. Both India and the U.S.A. are bound by the principles of the world. Peace and support for U.N.O. India is keeping a close watch on the foreign policy trends of Democratic and Republic Party Presidents. Accordingly, we prepare our policy towards the U.S.A.

 

5. Explain the relationship between India and Russia.

Ans: a) India has a cordial relationship with Russia.

b) Even though India followed Non Aligned policy, it had good relations with Russia in the field of economics, politics and other areas.

c) Russia had opposed China’s invasion of India in 1962.

d) During the Goa liberation in 1961 – Russia supported India.

e) USSR had supported India at UNO

f) USSR had supported the Tashkent agreement between India and Pakistan in 1966.

g) In 1971 India and USSR signed an agreement of20 years for peace and cooperation,

h) USSR had supported the establishment of Bilai and Bhokora steel plants.

i) India has taken major support from Russia to improve its industries and technology.

j) Russia has extended its support to India’s quest for a permanent seat in the UN security council.
