II. Answer the following questions:
1. Write a note on the houses of parliament?
Ans: The Parliament consists of two houses. The Upper House is called Rajya Sabha and the Lower House is called Lok Sabha.
Rajya Sabha :
a) The number of seats in the Rajya Sabha is 250, of which 238 members are elected by members of Assemblies and Union Territories.

science and social work are nominated by the President.
a) This House is also known as the House of Elders.
Lok Sabha :
a) The members of the Lok Sabha are elected directly by the people.
b) The maximum number of seats is 545 from which 543 members are directly elected by the people.
c) two anglo-Indians are nominated by the President.
d) 79 sets are reserved for SCs and 41 seats are reserved for STs.
2. Write a short note on the structure of Rajyasabha.
Ans: a) There are 250 members in the Rajya Sabha.
b) 238 members are elected by the members of the State Assemblies.
c) The remaining 12 members, are experts from various fields like art, science, and social work are nominated by the President.
d) It is also known as the House of Elders.
e) It is a permanent body and is not dissolved like the Lok Sabha.
f) The term of the members is 6 years.
g) One third of its members retires on the expiration of the six-year term every second year. In their places, new members are elected.
3. What are the qualifications needed to become a member of the Lok Sabha?
Ans: a) Should be a citizen of India.
b) Should be more than 25 years of age.

f) Should possess qualifications as specified by Parliament from time to time.
4. Explain the election process for the post of the President.
Ans: The President is elected by members of both houses of the parliament, all members of legislative Assemblies of all States. His term of office is 5 years, he can be removed from the office by the Parliament through the motion of Impeachment.
5. List out the powers of the Prime Minister.
Ans: a) He recommends the president to appoint council of ministers.
b) He allocates various portfolios among the ministers.
c) Takes interest in framing policies related to planning, defense etc.
c) He is responsible for all actions of the govt.
d) He coordinates the activities of the various ministers.
e) Meetings of the Union cabinet are held under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister.
6. Write a note on the formation of the Union cabinet and its responsibilities.
Ans: The Union Cabinet is the real Executive and has Ministered in two hierarchies. The first one is a cabinet and the second is the minister of state. The maximum strength of the Union Cabinet is 15% of the total strength of the parliament. The Cabinet has two kinds of responsibilities. The minister of every department is responsible for the administration of his department. He has individual responsibility for the success or failure of his department. The Union Cabinet has a collective responsibility to the Parliament with regard to the decisions and policies taken by it. Therefore the cabinet is in power as long as it enjoys the trust of the Parliament. When it loses trust, it has to be removed by a No-Confidence Motion.
7. How are the judges of the Supreme Court nominated and what are their qualifications?
Ans: The President nominates the Chief Justice and the other judges of the Supreme Court.
The qualifications of the Supreme Court judge are :
a) One should be a citizen of India.
b) Should have served as a High Court for at least five years,
c) Should have been an advocate of the High Court for 10 years.
d) Should be a distinguished jurist.
